Food Bank Donations – UPDATED

Recently five Year Nine pupils visited the Warrington Food Bank and learned how the company works.

On Wednesday 20th December five Y9 girls visited Warrington Food Bank to donate the vast amounts of food collected at school. Bridgewater collected more than they ever had before to donate to the food bank this school year as four Year Nine pupils organised the collection: Rain or shine, they stood outside every morning collecting food and went round classrooms spreading the message for people to donate.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for a wide range of different reasons. When a family cannot afford food they can visit food banks which are places that food is donated to and then given out to people in need. Did you know that one in five people in the UK lives below the poverty line?

Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate food amongst other essential items like nappies and toothpaste to a foodbank which can then be taken by people in need. Large collections often take place as part of Harvest Festival celebrations and food is also collected at supermarkets. Volunteers at the foodbank then sort food to check that it’s in date and pack it into boxes ready to be given to people in need. Over 40,000 people give up their time to volunteer at foodbanks in Britain alone!

At Warrington Food Bank you can also receive a food parcel which is a package of food that will last you three full days, containing foods such as tea or coffee, pasta, breakfast cereals and tinned vegetables or meat.

Warrington Food bank is part of The Trussell Trust which has a network of 428 foodbanks across the UK. In 2016/17, The Trussell Trust’s Foodbank Network provided 1,182,954 three-day emergency food supplies and support to UK people in crisis. Of these, over 430,000 went to children.
