Year 11 BTEC: All The World’s a Horror Story

On 18th April, Bridgewater High School were treated to the fantastic show, All The World’s a Horror Story, devised and performed by the year 11 BTEC students. The slightly creepy but incredible production included songs from smash-hit musicals such as “Seasons of Love” from Rent, and “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago, as well as musical numbers from the big screen: two songs from 2017’s The Greatest Showman were featured, as well as “Be Prepared” from The Lion King.

After talking to the cast, we discovered that the entire show had been created from scratch by the pupils, with only a stimulus to work from. Through lots and lots of rehearsals, the pupils managed to put together incredible pieces of scriptwork, vocal performances and dance.

Sections of the show were inspired by Antonin Artaud’s “Theatre Of Cruelty”, short pieces that assault the audience members’ emotions, giving several metaphorical meanings to otherwise simple pieces of theatre. The characters were often witty and entertaining, with the cast members’ names also incorporated – such as Cinderemma, Chariel, and Draculaura, to name a few. The plot, set in Cruella’s hotel in hell, was equally shocking and entertaining, and it was easy to connect with all the characters as they struggled to get back to the ‘other’ dimension. With the added underlying romance between the devil Lucifer and Disney princess Giselle, the play was a fantastic success and the effort put into it was insane.

Well done Year 11 BTEC!
